Protected Learning Time Session 

Fife’s GP Practices are committed to providing patients with the highest quality care. As part of this, GP Practices participate in a number of Protected Learning Time (PLT) sessions throughout the year which allows them to provide access to training for the whole practice team.

GP Practices in Fife are taking part in a PLT session on Tuesday 10th March between 1pm and 6pm. Please be assured access to urgent care for patients of surgeries taking part will continue throughout this time.

During those hours on Tuesday 10th March, Urgent Care Services Fife (Out Of Hours Service) will provide urgent care and support to patients whose practices are closed and who need urgent care that can’t wait until their GP surgery re-opens.
This care can be delivered via telephone consultation, assessment in one of Fife's urgent care centres or a home visit when assessed as being clinically appropriate.
Patients or Community Pharmacies who require to contact a participating GP Practice urgently during the time they are closed for PLT should call the Urgent Care Service on 01592 729250.

After 6pm, patients from all of Fife's surgeries can call NHS 24 on 111, as per normal process. GP surgeries will resume their usual working hours again on Wednesday 11th March 2026.

Advanced notice of any closures for staff training will be provided on our practice website whilst also being displayed within both practice buildings.

When We Are Closed

Your doctors participate in NHS 24. This operates from 6.00pm - 8.00am weekdays, throughout the weekend and some public holidays.  This service is for medical emergency calls only.

When you telephone the practice you will be asked to call the out of hours NHS 24 telephone number. This telephone number is 111. Your call will be triaged and you may be asked to attend the centre at St Andrews Hospital or Kings Cross Hospital in Dundee or be visited at home.

For life-threatening emergencies such as chest pain or stroke, patients should call 999 and request the ambulance service.

During the above training dates, if you feel you require medical assistance for a life threatening condition, you should dial 999 and request the ambulance service.  If you require Urgent Care from 1pm to 6pm on the above training dates, you should contact NHS Fife on 01592 729250.  From 6pm, please call NHS 24 on 111.

The doctors of Tayview work on the following days:

All of our doctors work within a flexible rota and not all doctors work every day. Newport surgery premises are open from 8am - 6pm each weekday and Tayport surgery premises are open from 8am - 12pm every Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Any request for a house call or urgent appointment may be triaged by a doctor to ascertain how best to deal with your request.  This will usually involve a telephone discussion first and it is vitally important that we have an up to date telephone number for the doctor to contact you on.

Patients who genuinely need to be seen urgently on the day will always be seen but if your problem is not urgent the doctor will advise you of an alternative course of action.

It can be hard to predict the demand for each site every day so it may mean that you will be offered an appointment at the surgery that is not your nearest. If you are able to attend either surgery this will help us greatly in providing the quickest access for you.

At times, such as when a doctor is on annual leave, the Practice will use a locum doctor in order to assist the Practice.  Locum doctors are fully qualified General Practitioners and have been fully certified by NHS health boards to enable them to locum at practices.
